Pearson, Fayetteville Technical Community College Prepare to Serve Additional Military, Civilian Personnel and Families

Fayetteville, NC (PRWEB) March 30, 2010

Like many community colleges across the US, Fayetteville Technical Community College has seen a spike in enrollments due to the recession. But Fayetteville also faces other, unique challenges: The community is home to Fort Bragg, whose residents have coped with multiple military deployments over the past decade.

And now, Fayetteville is preparing for an influx of 40,000 additional military and civilian personnel and their families beginning in March 2011, the result of the US Department of Defense Base Realignment & Closure Commission's (BRAC) decision to relocate the US Army Reserve Command to Fort Bragg from Georgia.

In anticipation of these changes, nearly 100 community and education leaders came together recently for a summit to discuss issues impacting the region as a result of the population increases, including managing the expected growth in community college enrollments and proven solutions that improve student success in hybrid and online learning environments. The summit was sponsored by Pearson Learning Solutions, a business unit of Pearson, a global leader in education, technology and services.

"As we prepare to welcome thousands of new residents to our region, we must focus on the enormous impact they will have on our education system," said Barbara Tansey, Vice President of Academics and Student Services at Fayetteville Technical Community College. "We have been working diligently with the BRAC Regional Task Force to determine how the expected population growth will affect the region's community colleges, and we are grateful to Pearson for convening the summit as part of our ongoing efforts."

"Community colleges are the pillars of local communities across the US," said Don Kilburn, CEO of Pearson Learning Solutions. "We continue to work in partnership with North Carolina's colleges to arm them with the technology and tools they'll need to successfully manage increasing enrollments and promote their students' success in hybrid and online learning environments."

The summit included presentations and facilitated discussions about topics such as strategies to improve achievement and retention; using technology and customized solutions to personalize learning and enhance student engagement; and best practices and resources to enhance courseware and course design.

The keynote address was presented by Carolyn Jarmon of the National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT). Ms. Jarmon is widely published on the topics of effective delivery of student services and distance education and is a sought-after consultant by institutions and corporations interested in learning in distributed environments.

Pearson provides complete, customizable online courses in many disciplines including allied health, business, criminal justice, and education, plus a full suite of custom media options for the classroom. Pearson's courseware services and library offerings are powered by best practices in instructional design and crafted by a team of course writers, subject matter experts and technologists.

ZK Announces the Availibility of ZTL to the Java Community as the First Testing Suite Allowing Visual Comparison Testing Based on jUnit and Selenium

London (PRWEB) August 09, 2011

ZTL is an open source testing tool providing automatic recording and testing for ZK applications, offering developers the ability to rapidly create testing cases in order to verify functionality and features of their applications. The suite is built upon standard testing libraries jUnit and Selenium, combining together to provide seamless integration with the ZK framework without having developers to worry about the configuration of the selenium environment.

Additionally, the ZK team has taken testing to a whole new horizon by introducing the concept of ICT (Image Comparison Testing) providing an easy way to test component positioning. The reason and motivation behind developing this vision testing method is because it requires a lot of effort and time to verify all the status and styling of layout components and/or widgets by using normal unit testing techniques. This, therefore, has led to the idea of visual comparison as it would be much easier, efficient and less time consuming to visually compare screenshots to allocate any discrepancies than to write numerous lines of assertions to achieve the same outcome.

The basic mechanism of vision testing is to firstly encapsulate the image comparison algorithm into a Java API called verifyImage() which then compares the current image with the standard version of the image. If an area is any different from the standard image, the test case will throw a jUnit AssertionError exception. to identify the area which failed and store the result for debugging purposes

ZTL is a powerful testing suite providing developers ease and convenience to test their ZK applications whilst leveraging both the client and the server side by simulating client action and sending them back to the server. ZTL now also supports scripts generated from ZK selector integrated Selenium IDE (without a need for a UUID generator) combined with Eclipse to test applications more quickly and effectively. ZTL is now available and has been gaining positive reviews from users around the world, to use ZTL, please refer to the project home page.

The Million Moms Challenge provides a vibrant community that connects moms across the globe by using the latest social media strategies together with world-class broadcast and digital news platforms to shine a light on the extraordinary challenges faced by mothers and babies in the developing world. The community will also feature personal stories of motherhood from over 900 mom bloggers participating in the movement.

Stories based on compelling characters and innovative solutions will be featured on ABC News broadcasts including Good Morning America, World News with Diane Sawyer, Nightline, and 20/20, as well as other ABC News platforms including ABCNews.com and ABC News Radio. There is so much we can do together so many simple ways for us all to link arms to make sure every mother and child has a chance to lead a healthy life, said ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer.

The Million Moms Challenge will focus on things mothers care about: the right nutrition to support their pregnancies, skilled attendants to assist in safe deliveries of newborns, and vaccines that allow children to survive to celebrate their first birthdays and beyond.

As part of the initiative a dedicated website (http://www.millionmomschallenge.com) will provide a live, interactive forum for some of the nations top mom bloggers to share their stories and ideas through blogs and video posts in real time with moms and midwives in the developing world. Viewers who want to know more and get involved will find ways large and small to make a difference in their own communities and around the world. As the largest network of mom blogs on the web, we are honored to power the Million Moms Challenge community and enable women from across the globe to connect, share and learn about safe childbirth and childrens health, said Rustin Banks, co-founder and chief executive of BlogFrog. "The Million Moms Challenge campaign demonstrates the power and influence that is created when like-minded people engage in conversations about passionate topics that matter."

You dont have to be a mom to help a mom, said Kathy Calvin, CEO of the UN Foundation. A healthier tomorrow for our world starts with healthy moms and babies today. The Million Moms Challenge gives us the chance to make history by sharing stories, ideas and sparking a global conversation that will help the United Nations build a global partnership for healthy lives, she added.
